Open-plan design acoustically challenging
A minimalist interior, with few doors and large windows, gives free rein to sound in this home in Silkeborg, Denmark. A Troldtekt acoustic ceiling therefore goes hand in hand with the open-plan architecture as a way of creating a pleasant atmosphere in the home.
On a corner plot in Silkeborg lies a modernistic 170 m2 house with a flat roof and magnificent large windows. The house has a more open-plan design than classic single-family homes. The living room, kitchen, dining room and hall are a single large room, broken up only by a central core. The core consists of a toilet and pantry, with built-in niches along the sides for a workstation and study space.
The open-plan design, large windows and slate flooring create a unique sense of space, but have been acoustically challenging.
“We chose Troldtekt acoustic ceilings for the entire house. Both because a uniform ceiling throughout creates the best visual appearance, and because it is extremely important to carefully control the acoustics in a home like this. Sound propagates very easily, and the acoustic panels therefore have a huge effect,” says Henrik Dissing, Director of HD Bolig, which constructed and furnished the house.
Focus on natural materials
It is important to Henrik Dissing that the house has a pleasant atmosphere and charm, despite being brand new. Natural materials have therefore been used extensively in the furnishings, which is also good for the environment.
“A home has to be natural and pleasant to live in. We chose a rustic slate floor and Troldtekt acoustic panels to contrast with the sharp lines and minimalist interior. Outside, the black brick walls are broken up by pale ThermoWood and a large covered wooden deck. Overall, an interesting interplay between contrasting materials has been achieved,” says Henrik Dissing.
The deck is at the same level as the inside floor, so the outdoor space becomes an extension of the indoor area. It has a perfect south-west aspect, and is completely screened from neighbours and traffic, making it a truly charming outdoor space.
