The peace and the place to enjoy nature

Aesthetics and sensuality characterise Icelandic artist Kristín Björk Titmarshian’s home which commands magnificent views of Vejle Fjord in Jutland. She has a job as an art therapist and also has a studio - Galleri Bjørk - at home, where she produces her own works of art.

Given her longing for the sea, it was not hard for Kristín to agree when her husband announced that he had found the perfect plot on which to build the couple’s dream home, offering peace and tranquillity and stunning sea views.  Assisted by the architects Billund//Hansen arkitekter, the couple have created a home which only has a few large rooms but has fulfilled their needs after their grown-up children moved out.

Kristín herself or with her carpenter husband found or chose most of the materials used to build the house. She believes that her childhood in Iceland is reflected in her choice of colours which are closely related to those found in nature.

“I think that natural light has a positive effect on people, so it was important for us to embrace it. Here, the light coming from the sky and the sea is fantastic and we have tried to exploit it to the full.  In the large rooms, where the ceilings are almost 4 metres high, it was also important to consider the acoustics. This is why many guests comment favourably on the interior and the quiet we have created through installing Troldtekt panels in natural wood with built-in spots on all the ceilings,” says Kristín.

“White ceilings would be far too clinical and unnatural in my eyes. The house is full of life because it plays on the similarities and contrasts which you also find outdoors. For example, the marble floors and the Troldtekt ceilings are almost the same colour, while the smooth surface of the tiles contrasts extremely well with the rustic ceiling panels,” she explains.
