Finalist at RIBA Awards: Learning Centre for UNESCO World Heritage Site
Following expansion, the Roman Baths and Pump Room has installed Troldtekt acoustic panels in a new learning centre. Now the new premises are in the running for the RIBA South West Awards 2023.
The Roman Baths and Pump Room in the city of Bath (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is a museum of great historical significance. Following expansion, the museum has added modern learning spaces, so that schoolchildren, in particular, can enjoy a first-class learning experience. All the new learning spaces feature Troldtekt acoustic panels.
The architecture has now been shortlisted for the regional RIBA Awards 2023 in the South West of England, where a total of 24 selected projects compete for the prestigious award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
The aim is to celebrate the best architecture in the whole of Britain.
A jury assesses all projects, and the winner is expected to be announced in May. The regional winners then have a chance to win the National RIBA Awards 2023, with winners due to be announced in June.
Learning in a comfortable environment
Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios designed the extension for the Roman Baths and Pump Room for client Bath And North East Somerset (BANES) City Council.
Previously, the museum had only one learning space, but the new grant-funded Clore Learning Centre has now been established alongside a publicly accessible Bath World Heritage Centre. The learning centre consists of three learning spaces, a chill-out zone, and a special study zone with Roman artefacts.
What makes this special is that the buildings are connected to the earlier Roman baths by means of underground corridors and crypts.
As the museum is mainly visited by school classes, the architects chose the Troldtekt solution to contribute to a healthy indoor climate with good acoustics. They chose classic natural wood Troldtekt acoustic panels.
