Striking architecture in durable materials
Located in central Copenhagen between a former power station, single-family houses and the architectural gem Dronningegården, a Modernist residential complex, the office building Turbinehuset blends into the overall street plan with a restaurant and supermarket on the ground floor.
Red brick and beautiful tombak panelling around the windows characterise Turbinehuset in Adelgade. Standing six storeys high, the building is a massive structure, yet stands back from the compact urban environment to create space for an elegant entrance area and allow extra daylight into the office environments. Various firms rent office space in Turbinehuset, but they all use the shared lunch café at street level, which in the evening becomes Restaurant Honey.
Turbinehuset was conceived and designed by Danielsen Architecture A/S in cooperation with Tetris as a lasting and well-built office block, but in many ways it is also modern and flexible. The building is certified at gold level according to the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) system, and is thus sustainable at many levels.
Rustic nerve
The entrance area and the main staircase are an important part of the building’s architectural identity, and strike a fine balance between rustic materials and clear-cut details. Daylight fills the stairway enclosure, while the office floors are flooded with natural light from both the street and the central courtyard. All the ceilings in the building feature grey Troldtekt, which ensures good acoustics, and the custom-designed ceiling lighting can be adjusted as desired as the light fixtures are installed on tracks.
The rustic look is particularly prominent on the upper three floors where the IC Group is domiciled, as the company wanted a rawer and more graphic interior, and therefore chose concrete floors. They are thrilled with Turbinehuset’s central location and modern, flexible design in solid materials. “Despite the raw interior, the acoustics are extremely good throughout,” says Line Johansen from IC Group.
